Give it up or keep it?

Charlie Bear here with a dilemma. Mom Peep gets the newspaper every day: hold-in-your-hands written words with pictures even. There are sections on News, Business, Life, Local, Movies, and Sports (for Dad).

newspaper

Here’s the deal. Mom Peep takes that newspaper and me into the garage every night. She gives me a yummy treat and I keep her company while she rides her exercise bike and reads the paper (I love the cool floor in the summer).

Cool Garage Floor

But she’s thinking of dropping her subscription. It’s not really the money, it’s finding two or three of them tossed willy-nilly on the driveway. I tell ya – there’s nothing that announces “we’re not home” more than newspapers piling up in the driveway.

Sooooo….Mom doesn’t want to bother the neighbors to come over and toss them into the backyard, and she doesn’t want to ask the grown kids to make a special trip to come over to bring them in. So the only other option is to stop the delivery.

She wonders where she’ll be able to read the personal stories, the comics that make her laugh, the Dear Abby stuff. She wonders if she’ll miss it.

comics

Will I miss it? Darn right. I want that treat every night. She says she’ll still ride her bike, and she tells me she’ll have more time to read actual books then.

But she wonders where she can get those good feelings, and the scoop on what’s happening in the world, if she doesn’t get the newspaper?

Any ideas?

Wiggles and Woofs to you all,
Charlie Bear

I think the newspaper is harder to read online. It has too many links before you can read the article you want. I love the comics too.

      Susan,
I think Mom Peep would agree! She does love that papery feel and flipping the pages. Ahhh….how attached we get.

Charlie, tell your Mom Peep that we put a mail-type slot in our garage door for the paper. We had some sneaky human who kept stealing it off our porch at 4:00 am, so it works really, really well. The paper would already be in the garage waiting for you.

      Kay,
Do you think a drive-by newspaper boy will walk up the driveway and put the paper in a slot? Me thinks not. But Mom Peep could ask him because it is a REALLY COOL idea!

Charlie Bear, I gotta tell you. I made the decision to cut out having the paper delivered. I thought I’d get it online. But I didn’t. It wouldn’t be the same. I think if it’s something your sweet Mom Peep enjoys, she should keep getting it!

      Julie,
You know what? Mom Peep DOES enjoy it, but she also feels sad that she doesn’t have more time to read actual books. And so she thinks that if she gives up the paper (which has a lot of yucky news in it anyway), she’ll devote more reading time to lots of lovely stories (like your novels when they come out). : O ) So only good can come of it, along with no willy-nilly newspapers flipped out on our driveway!

My hubbie is a newspaper addict. He would read 3-4 different papers a day if he could, but he’s whittled it down to one. We’ve thought about going to a newspaper subscription on the kindle, but he says he would miss the comic section too much. It’s too bad they don’t make a subscription comics collection. You can look up individual strips online, but that’s not quite the same.

      Karen,
Tell your hubby my Mom Peep is the same. She loves the comics! They say laughter is good for the body, right? She’s going to have to get the name of the one with the boy and his dog and see if she can find that one online to follow.
Thanks for the reminder for Mom Peep.

    Hi Charlie Bear,

We are another family that gets the newspaper online and my mom is all for it. She’s into that recycling stuff and using less paper to save more trees. I don’t understand about the trees because the ones in our yard are just fine, but that’s what she says. She stopped getting the paper a few years ago and says she doesn’t really miss it since there is so much news online. She even gets “Dear Abby” online. She loves to read books, too, but she reads most of them on her Kindle. You can also subscribe to books and magazines on them, just like on your pc. She said it wasn’t even that hard to get used to. Hope this helps your mom peep make her decision. But as long as you keep getting those treats, WE know that’s what really matters!

    Your pal,
    Jake

Oh! Oh! Dear Abby is online! I have to tell Mom Peep right away! And you hit it straight on…I have to keep getting my treats, no matter what.

Dear BJ: when we’re gone more than a day or so, we have the papers held, then delivered in a batch when we get home. No charge for this service. For short trips, overnights, etc., we have a mail slot cut in the garage door. The news guy just puts them in there and they are ready for us when we get home, no one the wiser we are gone. Try it? Dan,
Mom Peep is always going through those “batches” of papers and reads each one in order after being gone. I bet you do that too. She loves the idea of a mail slot in the garage door. Hmmm…something to consider!
Woofs and wiggles and we hope your kitty is calmer now…

    Charlie Bear,
The others have beat me to it and said your peep mom could get most all newspapers online, some charge, some don’t if you subscribe to them any way. Here’s another idea about them being tossed every which way; She might be able to get a ”Newspaper Tube”, My paper co. gives me one free and whomever delivers the paper to the house just slips it in that tube, no rain to wet it nor the wind does not blow it out but when you are gone someone would still need to get it out so it could not be seen by any one going by. Nothing like a real hand held newspaper though. Good reading paper, books and whatever.. All have a good weekend.

      Beaugie,
A tube! Now that sounds like a great solution in many ways. Mom Peep isn’t sure what to do, but she does know she loves the feel of the paper in her hands (like a printed book).

Yep, we got our son in law an e-subscription to the paper for his birthday and he LOVES it. We don’t want to be tied to the computer like that so still get the “hard copy” papers but do put vacation holds on delivery when we’re away. It works well. Enjoy your paper however you read it–does keep you up on happenings around you and the world. Happy summer and big full moon tonight. Don’t howl at it, Charlie, it’s a good thing!

Bailey and Skippy here. Our mom peep is really dumb on some things, but she has a cool idea about this one. How about just going on line and reading the newspaper? Woof.
