Yikes! I’ve Been Scalped — says Charlie Bear

Yup, it had to happen. If you’re a small-ish dog, and you have long hair like me, then you’ve had that dreaded H A I R C U T that makes us look dopey. Okay, nothing could make me look too dopey, hey, I am really cute and I know it, just don’t look past my face on this one.

See, the thing is, Mom and Dad Peep have never had a dog like me. Well, that’s an understatement. I’m pretty unique. In many ways. But when it comes to grooming needs for me, they’re clueless.

Big dog Rex was a Golden Lab. He had one of those wash ‘n wear coats. After a bath, he shook himself and he was done. He didn’t need a thing done to him except ear cleanings and Mom took care of those all the time (Rex was prone to ear infections with those big floppy things on top of his head).

Me, it’s not my ears. It’s my fur. It grows long, shaggy, and gets matted. Yup, that’s the problem. Dad tries to keep me clipped, especially around my face so he can see my eyes (he loves my eyes), but I give him a hard time when he works with me with the scissors. He can only go so far, and by that I mean the first one-third of me is trimmed nicely, but the back two-thirds of me became long and matted.

So off to the groomer Mom took me and after much discussion and consideration, the lady there worked on me all afternoon. They double teamed me with the groomer girl I’m used to (baths and nail clippings and stuff) and then this girl who gives haircuts. She’s used to rescue dogs, and she’s not afraid.

So here I am post-haircut. See how short my fur is on my back end? That’s because I was so matted they had to get all that out. It’ll grow back though — probably faster than we all think.

So have you had one of these H A I R C U T S? What did you think and how long did it take to grow back?

I’m still wiggling and woofing, short hair and all!

    Hi CB!

I think you look pretty spiffy! I’m a short haired fella myself, and I’ve never had a haircut, but the old cat, Piper gets shaved every May. Mom takes her to the groomer and gets her what’s called a “lion cut” like poodles get, for the summer. I think she looks kind of funny, but I don’t laugh. I don’t want to hurt her feelings, besides, she’d probably swat me if I did! Piper is a Persian cat and has long silky hair that gets matted pretty easily. Mom keeps her brushed, but she still gets mats sometimes. Piper gets a haircut in late spring so that she will be cooler during the hot weather. Her hair all grows back by the end of the summer so she is warm and cozy during the winter.

    Take care, Charlie Bear!

    Your pal,

Piper must look really funny — part lion, part mouse. lol I’m glad I don’t get a “lion cat cut.” Though, who knows, Mom might give that to me next. I better be careful what I say!

Wiggles & woofs to you, Jake,

Hi Charlie! I think you look better with longer hair, but hey, the cut isn’t too terrible….My dog nephew had a haircut at Christmas and he looked smaller by half! It was shocking, although I know he gets lots of Lily’s kibble(my dog neice, his pal and larger dog) and isn’t starving…………

    Lots of hugs to you.

I SOOOO agree. I like my hair longer. The good thing — especially like when I see Dad and he comes home with a haircut that looks like they didn’t leave a piece of hair on his head — is it will grow back. Whew.

When Mom looks at the back of me (the little butt I have now) she’s jealous. She thinks if only a haircut would make HER look that skinny!

      Wiggles & Woofs to you,
      Charlie Bear

Don’t feel bad, Charlie, it WILL grow back. I’m a Golden and I need trims all the time: ears, tail, feathers, and toes. Otherwise, I start to look scruffy. Not big on the actual process, but I look pretty spiffy afterwards. And so do you!

Oh, you’re one of those gorgeous Goldens that my mom sees and drools over. She thinks your breed is so pretty.

Thank you for the compliment that I look spiffy. That makes me feel great.

      Wiggles & Woofs to you,
      Charlie Bear

Bailey and Skippy say, “Man, and we thought you couldn’t get any cuter!”

      Bailey and Skippy,

Awwww, shucks. Thanks so much for the compliment. It makes me feel extra wiggly good because when I look in the mirror I don’t recognize the back half of myself!

Have a super weekend coming up.

      Wiggles and woofs,

Charlie Bear, we’ve never had a dog who needed grooming, but I tell you what–you look adorable! Makes me want to get a new friend just like you. 🙂

You’re like my Mom Peep. Not used to us “needy” dogs — at least in the grooming department! She’s adjusting. She even thinks she’ll take me in for what they call a dry brush out every couple of weeks.
Holy cow, I’m getting tons of attention I didn’t even think I’d get!

Woofs and wiggles to you and big boy Clyde,
      Charlie Bear
