Dog to Dog – Do You Like Your Name?

December 27, 2011 at 9:02 am 24 comments

I happen to like my name A LOT. Charlie Bear is manly yet sweet, temperamental yet cuddly. In fact, that’s what I’m doing on Dad’s lap in the picture…cuddling. Do you like your name? Here’s something Mom Peep found. Check it out.

What’s In a Name? Naming Your Dog
By: Virginia Wells

Today we think of dogs as real family members, and the latest trend is to give dogs human names, names that we would give our children. According to the ASPCA’s official list of top 30 pet names, the two most popular names are Max, Maxie, Maxwell or Maxine, which means “the greatest” in Latin, and Sam, Sammie or Samantha, which means “listener.” Scanning the list you will also find Buddy, Ginger, Jake, Maggie and Charlie (there’s my name!), a list not unlike a grade school attendance roster.

But not every dog is given a human name. The list also contains some tried-and-true oldies that are still popular, like Lady, Buster, Patches and Pepper. Let’s not forget about the dog’s personality. Names that reflect the very nature of your pet may be the way to go. After all, we probably have a pretty good picture of a dog that’s called Mayhem, Frisky, or Couch Potato.

How do you go about naming your dog? You might want to observe your new pet for a few days and see if the personality suggests a name. But, for a start, keep the following tips in mind:

  • The general sound and rhythm of the name is important. You will say it and your dog will hear it over and over again. If the name is too long or too difficult to say, your pup will become confused or lose interest by the time you get to the fourth syllable.
  • Choose a name that your pet will easily recognize. Some experts say the ideal name is two syllables ending with a vowel sound, like Sami or Lassie.
  • Avoid names that sound too much like standard commands. For example, when you call Joe, your dog might only hear “No.”
  • Pick a name that will be just as appropriate once your pet is full-grown. A pup named Damage or Havoc may eventually grow up to be a quiet, stately dog.
  • Pick a name that you will be proud to call. Shadow or Molly might be less embarrassing than Ooga Booga or HeyYou. Once you have named your dog, be sure to use it often so he will learn it quickly. But remember, you want your dog to like his name. Try to use it only when you are playing with him, petting him, hugging him or trying to get his attention. Don’t use it when you are angry or reprimanding him. If you raise your voice every time you use his name, he won’t come when you call.

* * *

I’m glad I have a cool name. Rex the big dog had a cool name too. Sometimes Mom would call him Rexie or even Gray Face (when he got older). I wonder what she’ll call me later on? They already refer to me as Wild Man. But I know my real name…it’s Charlie Bear…and if you say it, I’ll listen.

So what’s YOUR name? And do you like it?

    Thanks Charlie Bear.
You taught me something. When I call Pixie sometimes she doesn’t come. Now, I know the reason. When she has done something I don’t approve of. Like grabbing something she shouldn’t have and running like a bullet through the house and back again. I yell her name. Now I will just say “Leave It.” I definitely want her to like her name. Because the name just fits her. She is nine inches tall and weights six lbs.
    Thank You, JoySue

Pixie — what a cute name! I’ll bet you look like one too all six pounds of you.

My Mom Peep is happy you learned something from my post. I did too. I like that I have a cool name.

Hi Charlie Bear. Kelly came to us “used” and she came with her name. Even though she was only 1 yr old and probably could have adjusted to a new name, we decided to keep it because she has reddish hair, and it’s a cute name for an Irish gal.

Hi, Charlie Bear, (Love your name), I might have already told you that my peep called me “Bailey” when she adopted me from the SPCA as in George Bailey in IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE because I’m so full of life and energy. She thought of calling me “Barney,” but the neighbor’s dog has that nomenclature.
Anyway, I love my name. When Mom says, “Bailey!”, it usually means Food! Food! Food!
This morning I got my stitches out at the vet’s office. I got my plumbing out a month ago, so now that I’m healed, the stitches needed to come out. The vet gave me a goofy shot that made me goofy (and dopey) for almost an hour. But now I feel pretty good. Mom gave me some breakfast when we got home then she put me in my cage to calm down and take a nap. So, I’ll bark to you later zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

      Bailey,

So glad you are home from the vet’s office and your stitches are out. Those are irritating at the end, aren’t they? So now you are all better, even eating breakfast.

I like your name, Bailey. Barney would make me think of that big, purple thing — he’s in a cartoon or something. Bailey is a WONDERFUL name for a wonderful life. Your Mom got that right!

Wiggles & woofs to you after you rise from your nap,

i love it when you blog, Charlie Bear. My Akita was born on the Davidson farm, so he had to be Harley (Davidson) Barkman.

Then Sadie came to us, and we tried all kinds of names and she seemed to respond to Sadie or Lady (we found out a year later that she had been called Freckles because of the marks on her feet, but i guess she didn’t like that name, cause she left there).
And Shadow is, well, she’s a shadow, following her peep around all the time, though she’s been there for 2 years already! Or she follows Sadie, or whoever. She’s our lap dog, and we know she has coyote in her blood. We love them both to pieces, tho.
And even the wild cats will cuddle up to them!

Marianne (and Harley, Sadie and Shadow),

Those are really cool names. Does Harley “zoom” around like a mad man like me? I like to race around the yard doing my Indy laps.

I don’t “shadow” my Mom around too much. Rex the big dog used to do that. He never left her side and was never out of sight. Me? I guess I’ve been born to be on my own. Abandonment at a young age will do that to ya I guess.

But I’m loving my life now! And it sounds like Harley, Sadie and Shadow have a great mommy!

      Wiggles & Woofs,

For a while I had dogs named after writers or famous people: Sarah (for Sarah Bernhart the famous actress from years ago…hope I spelled the last name right) and Emily (for Emily Dickinson, the poet). The pet sitter liked calling Emily Emmy so we started doing that, too. Then I adopted two Chihuahuas who’d lived together…one is Zoe, a change from Penny which she didn’t look like, and Lucy. Since they were separated for a while, I thought it might confuse them if I renamed Lucy. I used both names for Zoe for a while until everyone was acclimated. Then along came foster dog Amber (I didn’t change that…she seemed too stressed and she’ll be going to an adoptive home when she calms down)…then three Chi dogs from a puppy mill were given to me to foster. One is Chris because he came here just before Christmas. One does a really good job of being a father to a puppy Chi and has a diamond shape near his tail. He became Ace. Then there is the puppy that looks like a baby giraffe so he’s Jack for the Jacksonville zoo giraffes…

      Barbara,

You have a true menagerie of tiny little lovebugs, that’s what my Mom Peep says when I told her about you.

Oooooooo….I like Chris for a dog that came just before Christmas!
And Ace is a cool name. My Mom had a cat she called Diamond for the pretty shape on her face.

Mom says to feel all the love from those furry friends. And she says you have the biggest heart she’s ever seen.

      Wiggles & woofs to all,

Your mom is so nice to say I have a big heart. But I get so much love from these babies I’m the one who’s getting the benefit of lots of big hearts in little furry bodies. You should see what a greeting I get when I come home from running an errand…

Oh, Charlie Bear. I loved your name the minute I heard it. It’s so you, isn’t it! What about the name Clyde? I think he’s grown into his name–if that makes sense. At first he was cute and cuddly. Now, at 90 pounds (or so) he’s pretty solid for sure.

Tell your Mom great post. I love thinking about names.

      Dear Julie and Clyde,
Clyde reminds me of the Clydesdale horses…definitely large and regal and full of awesomeness (if that’s even a word). Sounds like your Mom and Dad Peeps knew what they were doing naming a little ‘ole cuddly puppy such a big stand-out name!

Guess what, Charlie Bear! I have one of those popular names, too, and Jake fits me well. My mom peep likes to give all her furbabies a full length name though, so when I am in trouble it’s “Jacob Issac!” But when I do something cute or want to cuddle then she says “Oh Boo Bear…” or when we go somewhere she says “Come on, Jakie!, so I have many different hats. I like them all just fine.

Want to hear the cats full names? They are Piper Marie, Abigail Lee, and Mikka Jane. However Mikka insists that her full name is “No! Mikka! No!” Hehehe.

A very Happy New Year to you and your peeps, Charlie Bear!

    Your pal,
Jake (Jacob Issac, Boo Bear, Jakie)

      Jake,
I like Boo Bear the best because it’s like my name. The cat’s names are regal, befitting their stature in the house (at least what they think is their stature, right?).
      Have a wiggly New Year,

My name is Clue, and not because I’m so good at finding things. Actually, when my peep when to the shelter, the first thing I did was jump up on her 80+ year old mother and knock her over. Ooops. Even after that, she still adopted me. On the way home, I kept trying to crawl into the front seat, sit on the gear shift and climb out the window. About half way home, my peep declared “this dog hasn’t got a clue how to behave.” The name stuck. My since my peep writes murder mysteries, that’s OK – people don’t have to know the truth.
